The Conservancy is an educational and cultural non-profit in existence since 1998, which was created to showcase The Lower East Side’s distinct history and identity, by offering customized private walking tours and innovative public tours of the cradle of American Jewish civilization. Our tours take visitors into sacred synagogue sites, where you learn how past generations came here, lived and worshiped. We aim to enrich the mind, enliven the spirit, tempt the palate, and inspire visitors of all ages and faiths. We want you to see where the American Dream began and is still alive and well.
We are the only touring organization with access to tour the Bialystoker Synagogue, a former Methodist Church believed to be a site on the Underground Railroad, that is covered in marvelous murals depicting the signs of the zodiac. This site was awarded one of 10 of the most Beautiful, Unique and Inspiring Synagogues in America by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2016. We are closed on Friday afternoons. Saturdays and Jewish holidays. Please call us to book a private customized tour with as much lead time as possible.
