Located on the east coast of New South Wales, Newcastle is only a few hours drive from the state's capital Sydney. This heritage-listed swimming pool lies adjacent to the sea - but be careful of dipping a toe in at high tide when the water can be choppy!

Alternatively, the Newcastle Ocean Baths are close by on firm land and worth a visit to view the Art Deco Pavillion alone. Or take a stroll to historic Fort Scratchley, this interesting site, first established in the 1880s, is now a great point to look out for migrating whales in the ocean below.

Finally one of the best things to do in Newcastle is to follow the moving Memorial Walk. This is a special pathway and cultural landmark that was built to commemorate the brave Australian and New Zealand soldiers who fought in Gallipoli in the First World War. The route is part bridge and part boardwalk and takes in the dramatic views from Strzelecki Headland between Bar Beach and King Edward Park. Make certain you don’t leave Newcastle before you experience it!

One of the best things to do in Canberra is to explore the region of Parliament Triangle. Begin at the incredible New Parliament House, a boomerang-shaped building on Capital Hill. Outside you can explore extensive gardens and even enjoy the view from its grass-covered roof! Inside the public can gain admission to the public galleries of the House of Representatives and the Senate. So during official sitting times, take the opportunity to view how Australia’s parliament works in person.

Highly recommended is the 3.5 kilometre walk from Parliament House to the centre of the city. The route takes in woodlands, includes informative signs about the area, and ends at the Jolimont Centre.

The food scene, wineries, and breweries found in Canberra are amongst the best in Australia. And that’s a high bar! Highly recommended for foodies is Verity Lane Market, a venue that includes a mouthwatering food hall, bars, and alfresco dining areas.

If you love wine then Canberra won’t disappoint! There are more than 140 vineyards in the region and many wineries offer great food and incredible views. Arrange a weekend getaway and enjoy the harmonious wines and landscapes of regions like Murrumbateman and Yass, and Canberra and Hall.

Finally, for a perfect evening, book a table at one of Canberra’s breweries or distilleries. Head to the district of Fyshwick to sample the craft beer at Capital Brewing Co or a large glass of gin at the Big River Distillery.

Located to the south of Brisbane, on the country’s east coast, the Gold Coast is arguably the true tourist capital of Australia. It is famous for incredible sandy shores and a culture that attracts surfers from all over the world. The subtropical climate in this city is as wonderful as the landscape, with the Gold Coast appreciating more than 300 days of sunshine each year.

The region, that stretches south from Coolangatta up to Southport, includes the iconic Surfers Paradise. This glamorous 3 kilometres of white sand, framed by skyscrapers, is often compared to Miami Beach. It’s a popular tourist attraction for both surfers and families, and away from the water's edge, you will find plenty of cafes, restaurants, and shops. The Surfers Paradise Beachfront Market, held every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday evening, is a fun event that will have you browsing through hundreds of tantalizing stalls.

Beach lovers should also spend time at Coolangatta Beach, a coastal district with a more peaceful vibe than Surfers Paradise. The sea here is calm and ideal for snorkeling and swimming. Also highly recommended is Burleigh Heads National Park, a natural coastal headland located halfway between Coolangatta and Surfers Paradise. Here visitors can enjoy rainforest walks, whale watching, and the beautiful white sands of Burleigh Heads Beach.

Inland the Gold Coast has plenty to offer tourists, especially families with young children. The area has a remarkable list of theme park attractions worth visiting, including the Aussie-centric Dreamworld. The venue offers roller coasters, movie characters, close-up experiences with native Australian animals, and a sunset safari.

Sea World is just as impressive and this top Gold Coast attraction is the largest marine park in Australia. Shows here feature dolphins, sea lions, stunts on jet skis, and feeding presentations with penguins and polar bears.

For a final thrill head to Warner Bros Movie World, a land with superheroes, stuntmen, street parades, and 3D interactive rides. If you are brave and meet the minimum height requirements, why not try a hair-raising trip aboard the DC Rivals Hypercoaster and the Doomsday Destroyer!
