Lying to the west of Milwaukee in Wisconsin, Madison boasts a proud legacy in immigration, liberal politics, and farming. As a place blessed with beautiful lakes and a wealth of important history, this state capital is popular for its historical landmarks and fantastic sporting activities.

The city was built on an isthmus, a section of land surrounded by four lakes: Lake Mendota, Lake Monona, Lake Kegonsa, and Lake Waubesa. The four seasons of each year help to create different but equally enjoyable reasons to visit Madison and provide a variety of settings for tourists to enjoy.

Albuquerque

Located in beautiful Georgia, Atlanta is often considered the preeminent centre of the American South. Visitors are drawn to this Southern belle of a city for its green spaces, unparalleled cuisine, and to

If you want to learn more about this iconic moment in sporting history then head for the Atlanta History Center. This incredible museum was founded in 1926 and showcases every important aspect of the city’s past and present.

The Olympics also left a footprint in Centennial Olympic Park where a dancing fountain, known as the Fountain of Rings, provides the perfect area for children to play.

Built on the banks of the Colorado River in Central Texas, Austin lies 146 miles northwest of Houston. From the shores of Lady Bird Lake to its highest vantage point on Mount Bonnell, Austin is a place of natural beauty. Taking the Hike-and-Bike Trail around Lady Bird Lake is a great way of discovering the city’s main outdoor attractions.

The ‘Live Music Capital of the World’ moniker was derived from Austin’s varied and endless music heritage and 250+ venues. The famous live-music television program Austin City Limits has been broadcast here since 1976. Originally filmed at the University of Texas it later moved to its new home at the W Hotel in downtown Austin.

The Sixth Street District, affectionately known as ‘Dirty Sixth’ by locals, is host to Austin’s main nightlife scene. Lined with pubs, bars, and live-music venues this is one of the most charming and colourful areas of the city.

Tex-Mex food is a major draw to the city and you can sample the best of this cuisine at Austin’s historic Matt’s El Rancho. Also taste some smoky delights at the state’s best barbecue joints, Franklin Barbecue being its most famous.

This liberal town just loves kooky vintage fashion and upcycled jewellery. Local retail therapy is a big passion for Austinites and visitors will be enthralled by the countless boutique shops established in the city.

Austin

Important events from history are entwined with a strong sporting legacy and other modern popular culture here in Maryland’s largest city. Known as the ‘City of Neighborhoods’, Baltimore has 72 distinct districts and a diverse population born of immigrants from all over the world.

At its centre lies Mount Vernon, an artistic hub and home to the famous Washington Monument. Downtown areas to explore include the Inner Harbor, Little Italy, and the historic Fells Point. The scenic waterfront of Inner Harbor is packed with many interesting attractions. Visit the Maryland Science Center’s planetarium and observatory, and the National Aquarium, where you can view giant turtles.

In 1814 Baltimore was the inspiration for ‘The Defence of Fort M’Henry’ a poem penned by Francis Scott Key. One night the poet witnessed Fort McHenry holding steadfast against a ferocious assault by British forces. Moved by the sight of a lone American flag still flying the next morning, Key penned the prose that later became America’s national anthem. The story can be fully experienced at the Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine.

Sports fans must take a detour to the beautiful Oriole Park at Camden Yards, the home of Baltimore’s Major League Baseball team. Take a tour, enjoy a game, and celebrate old traditions with local fans.

Culture vultures can appreciate the arts at events like Artscape, held in Bolton Hill and considered to be the ‘largest free arts festival in America’. You can also view the world’s largest public collection of Matisse at The Baltimore Museum of Art for free, or pay homage at the grave of Edgar Allan Poe.

Film buffs should attend the annual Maryland Film Festival and check out its main venue the memorable Charles Theatre. The city’s streets are a veritable film set whose features have included Homicide: Life on the street, House of Cards, Veep, and the aforementioned The Wire.

Baltimore

When you visit Boston you appreciate how well the city’s old landmarks mix with the new. Nowhere is this more apparent than along the highly recommended three-mile Freedom Trail walkway. This popular tourist route will take you via 16 of Boston’s historical monuments, now interspersed with appealing modern architecture.

Interesting sites to visit on the tour include Bostons’ oldest cemetery King's Chapel Burying Ground, and the Old South Meeting House, where the Boston Tea Party was born. The walk ends in the district of Charlestown with impressive views of the USS Constitution and Bunker Hill Monument.

Boston Common and Public Garden offer green space, water activities, and monuments, both ancient and young. Respectively the oldest park and botanical garden in America, these connected areas are home to the Frog Pond and the city’s Swan Boats. The famous white watercraft were first launched in the 1870s and are a delightful way to explore the gardens' scenic waterways.

More waterside historical fun can be found all around Boston’s harbour. To discover important details about the past of Massachusetts's capital city, check out the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum. Boston

Many of Charleston’s top attractions can be found outside by its coastal seawalls and amongst lush historic parks. Walking tours are highly recommended, and bike taxis and horse-drawn carriages are a fun way to explore this South Carolina city.

A great place to start is Waterfront Park, an eight-acre green space filled with riverfront walkways, benches, trees, and shaded areas. Located along the banks of the Cooper River, the park has a pier, an ornate gazebo, picnic tables, and porch swings for visitors to enjoy. Lovely water features, including the amusing Pineapple Fountain, light up at night making the area particularly atmospheric after dusk.

Close by you can access The Battery and White Point Gardens, a popular landmark that offers amazing views of Fort Sumter and Charleston Harbor. These pretty public gardens, filled with oak trees and plants, also display statues and large cannons that date back to the Civil War.

A highlight for most visitors to Charleston is a boat ride to visit Fort Sumter, the famous site where America’s state wars began in 1861. Excursions depart from Liberty Square and Patriots Point and provide fantastic views of the water. Once at the fort take a National Park Rangers tour and hear the full story of the national monument, and the important part it played in US history.

Charleston is also home to some of the finest and well preserved historic buildings in America. If architecture is your passion don’t miss seeing Drayton Hall, the oldest antebellum mansion in the country.
Magnolia Plantation is also a must-see venue due to its extensive and memorable Romantic-style gardens.

Finally, The Old City Market is a focal point that combines the best of everything in Charleston. Constructed in circa 1790 the location is delightful, bustling, and offers tourists great shopping, dining, and an entertaining ambiance.


Charleston

Located in the Southeast region of America, Charlotte has a moving history and many landmarks to discover. Begin outside on the Liberty Walk that takes in the Liberty Hall DAR Monument that commemorates Charlotte’s role in the American Revolution. The history lessons continue at the highly recommended Charlotte Museum of History and Rosedale Plantation.

The city’s museums also house exhibitions covering events from more modern times. Don’t miss out on a visit to Carolinas Aviation Museum, the Levine Museum of the New South, and Hendrick Motorsports Museum, which showcases the history of Hendrick Motorsports.

Charlotte is a heaven for fans of NASCAR. The sports heritage is honoured at the NASCAR Hall of Fame, an innovative gallery designed to educate and entertain. Attractions here include the Hall of Honor, Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant, and the NASCAR Hall of Fame Gear Shop.

The city’s other sporting stars are the NFL‘s Carolina Panthers and the basketball team Charlotte Hornets. The Panthers play at the Bank of America Stadium and the Hornets at Spectrum Center. Both stadiums offer tours and are located in Uptown Charlotte.

The thrills really build at Paramount's Carowinds amusement park: the "Thrill Capital of the Southeast"! There is plenty of fun for the family here including the world’s fastest roller-coaster, Boomerang Bay waterpark, and a walk-through dinosaur exhibit with animatronics.

Charlotte’s Whitewater Center offers excitement on the water, the ground, and in the air. Test your rafting skills down its man-made rapids or grab a paddle and head out for some paddle-boarding, canoeing, and kayaking. Elsewhere in the venue you can tackle climbing walls, ziplines, and rope courses, or spend time mountain biking along its woodland trails.

Daytrips into the surrounding beautiful landscape of North Carolina are advised. Great adventures and activities can be undertaken just a few miles out of town. Feeling brave? Try the audacious 25 ft jump into the natural swimming hole at The Quarry at Carrigan Farms in Mooresville. Looking for something more peaceful? Then a hike in Crowders Mountain State Park or a walk through Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden might be more to your liking.

Charlotte

The Windy City is a medley of modern wonders and cultural offerings, plus its population is considered one of the friendliest in America. Forgetting Al Capone and his 1920’s gangster mob of course.

The first thing you notice when you arrive in Chicago is its bold skyscrapers, such as the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) and the neo-Gothic Tribune Tower. The best views you will get of the city is by going up one - the 360 Chicago Observation Deck and the Skydeck Chicago are two popular viewing platforms.

Don’t fancy looking down from a glass ledge on the 103rd floor? Then there are plenty of riverboat tours you can take to bask sedately in the architectural glory of Chicago. If you prefer to keep your feet on terra firma, The Magnificent Mile and the Chicago Riverwalk let you experience Chicago up close and without vertigo.

The city has world-leading museums and galleries where you can appreciate many masterpieces on display. The Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Contemporary Photography are all highly recommended. You can look into the solar system and the history of the universe at the Adler Planetarium or take in aquatic offerings such as piranhas and sharks at the Shedd Aquarium.

Chicago’s award-winning dining scene is as diverse as the city itself. From fine dining at luxurious rooftop bars to authentic street food, there is something for every palate here. Where would the world be without the Chicago-style (deep dish) pizza and the Maxwell Street Polish Sausage!

This Midwestern metropolis is steeped in musical history. Jazz is deeply rooted here, Rock and Roll was greatly influenced by the Chicago ‘Electric’ Blues, and House Music originated in a Chicago nightclub called The Warehouse. Colorado Springs also has a cosmopolitan centre with great restaurants and a flourishing brewery scene. The city’s atmospheric pubs, clubs, and international dining options have previously helped it acquire the moniker of ‘Little London’.

Nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts will love Pike National Forest that features the glacier-carved landmark of Pikes Peak. This popular destination is crisscrossed with exciting walking trails and visitors can take the steep cog railway 14,114 feet up to experience incredible views from the heights of the. Colorado Rockies.

A strong recommendation on this trip is to keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife as you ascend. At the top don’t miss out on the new and impressive Pikes Peak Summit Visitor Center, a building with state-of-the-art windows and facilities to match.

The vista is also remarkable from the Garden of the Gods Park, a registered American National Natural Landmark. Immense towers of sandstone rock, set against a backdrop of snow-adorned mountains and blue skies, have ensured this is the most popular attraction in the region. Take a fun jeep or Segway tour from neighbouring Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site venue, and enjoy a coffee and the views on one of the park's terraces afterward.

Other outdoor places of interest include the ancient Manitou Cliff Dwellings, Cheyenne Mountain State Park, and North Cheyenne Cañon Park. Book a ranger to visit the latter to help point out native inhabitants like black bears and beautiful features including the Helen Hunt Falls.

Some of the best indoor attractions in Colorado Springs feature galleries that focus on the city’s history and culture. The Colorado Springs Pioneer Museum is located in the old El Paso County Courthouse that was built in 1903. Visitors to the museum can appreciate many interesting exhibits that focus on the origins of Colorado Springs and the story of Pikes Peak.

The Peterson Air and Space Museum is another gem that can be found in an airfield construction built during World War II. The venue is packed with fascinating artifacts and includes the Medal of Honor Park.

Colorado Springs

The best way to take in the stunning scenery and architectural treasures of downtown Columbus is to walk or cycle along The Scioto Mile. A huge network of parks and trails follows the Scioto River on both sides, covering more than 175 acres. You can play in the 15,000 sq ft interactive fountain or scale the country’s biggest outdoors climbing wall. Events including free music concerts are also held here in the summer.

Columbus Zoo & Aquarium is an award-winning wildlife enclosure renowned as one of the top zoos in the country. It houses a 100,000-gallon tank filled with coral reefs and one of the biggest collections of reptiles in the US. Other highlights include red pandas, Mexican wolves, bald eagles, and Amur tigers.

When seeking some art and culture you can admire an Edward Hopper, Monet, or Picasso at the Columbus Museum of Art. Then head to The Center of Science and Industry if you want to learn more about outer space and the ocean. To enjoy a musical, ballet, or opera check the programme at the historic Ohio Theatre. For a more family-orientated excursion, LEGOLAND Discovery Center is dedicated to all things Lego and the perfect place for children.

The historic German Village is popular for both shopping, refreshments and its traditional architecture. You can eat in German-themed eateries like Schmidt’s Sausage Haus, and enjoy a drink in beer halls and gastropubs. North Market Farmer’s Market here is the perfect place to go to buy local fresh produce.

The residents of Columbus love tacos and hold a Taco Festival every May. Taco trucks can be found all over the city offering you their Mexican delights.

With its University influence, the Short North Arts District is a great place to explore at night. Spend the evening strolling around its boutique shops, pubs, art galleries, and cafés.

Columbus

Dallas is an absolute gem of a tourist destination. Located in north Texas, this US city has a fascinating history and a vibrant and burgeoning population. These factors have combined to create a location that has an exciting culture and a few tragic historical landmarks.

Obviously, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy is inextricably entwined within the past and present of the city. His life and death have been chronicled in detail at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza. Visitors to the venue can stand at the exact window that Lee Harvey Oswald fired his rifle from, and then head to the Grassy Knoll where the President was fatally shot.

The John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza is only a few blocks away. This roofless square cenotaph, designed to represent the spirit of the fallen President, is best seen after dark when lighting creates the illusion that the structure is supported by a lustrous glow.

Another President is honored at The George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum. Surprisingly fascinating, this is a highly recommended gallery for visitors to Dallas. Here you can investigate the Bush dynasty, a full-size replica of the Oval Office, and then experience the addictive ‘Decision Points Theater’. This final attraction invites guests to take a seat and make Presidential decisions based on real evidence. It’s reported to be strangely addictive!

When in search of art, take the city’s trolley service. The line trundles pleasantly up and down McKinney Avenue between Uptown and downtown to Dallas’s Arts District. This is a cultural hub and home to the striking Meyerson Symphony Center, the Winspear Opera House, and the Dallas Museum of Art. The area is dominated by Klyde Warren Park, 5.2 acres of green space that hosts concerts, food trucks, and daily yoga, chess, and sporting activities.

Tours for your list should include the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, Dallas World Aquarium, and the incredible AT&T Stadium. The sports arena, home to the Dallas Cowboys, has won multiple awards for its innovative design and offers behind-the-scenes access to the press box and locker room!

Finally, give in to your stomach’s grumbles and follow the aromas to a traditional Texan barbeque. There are plenty of great joints around but if you can get a seat, go to the Pecan Lodge. Heralded as the best in town this restaurant serves pit-smoked food from a location in the bohemian neighborhood of Deep Ellum. Turn up early as ques often line up, literally right out of the door, and into the car park!


Dallas

Denver is known as the Mile High City due to its location, high above sea level, in the US Mountain State of Colorado. Dating back to the Old West era of America this is a modern metropolis infused with an atmospheric history.

Visitors can start exploring at the place where it all began: Confluence Park. It was near Cherry Creek in
this popular green space where gold panners spotted the precious metal in 1858, an event that led to the positive expansion of the city. Today the park offers leisure activities on the waters of South Platte River and incredible views of downtown Denver.

Take advantage of the good climate and visit as many of Denver’s splendid parks as you can. Topping the best parks list are Washington Park, Cheesman Park, and Civic Center Park, which you will find nestled downtown. When your visit falls during skiing season, use Denver as your setting-off point to a ski resort in the Rocky Mountains.

Museums are an impressive feature of Denver’s quality attractions. The list includes the uber-modern Denver Art Museum known for its complex campus and indigenous artwork. Interesting exhibitions can also be found at the Denver Museum of Natural & Science, and the Kirkland Museum that takes tourists time traveling through 150 years of art and design.

A favourite historical landmark in the city is The Molly Brown House Museum. This grand early 20th Century building was the home of Margaret ‘Molly’ Brown, the most famous survivor of the tragic Titanic. Today it is a gallery that celebrates the life and philanthropy of this remarkable Denver citizen.

The historic district of Larimar Square is a great destination for entertainment and retail therapy. Alongside great shops and restaurants here you will find venues billing live music and comedy shows. Do not miss out on the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. This cultural locale has much to enjoy including performances held at Boettcher Concert Hall, the Auditorium Theater, and Ellie Caulkins Opera House.

Don’t want the music to stop? Why not head out and get your rocks off at Red Rocks Park & Amphitheater. This iconic American venue is famous for major live music sessions and the amazing acoustics created within its outdoor rocky auditorium.


Denver

Detroit is Michigan’s largest city, a metropolis developed on the banks of Detroit River and Lake St. Clair, between Lake Huron and Lake Erie. The Detroit International Riverfront is also a great destination for tourists, where you can indulge in more excellent retail therapy and visit a number of parks.

Heading east up the Detroit River you will discover beautiful Belle Isle, a three-mile-long island home to a variety of exciting attractions. The islands’ parkland, lakes, and hiking trails provide the perfect landscape for outdoor activities like golf, boating, and bike rides. Belle Isle also has Indoor venues including
Dossin Great Lakes Museum, Belle Isle Aquarium, and Belle Isle Nature Zoo, where visitors can feed deer by hand.

The city has played a vital role in the history of black Americans that includes creating the Underground Railroad that enabled slaves to flee to Canada. This remarkable story is told at the Museum of African-American History alongside exhibits that showcase African American leaders in the fields of Science and Technology.

Detroit

The 9-mile historic route of the El Paso Mission Trail bypasses some of the most important surviving Spanish mission stations in Texas. Dating back to 1598, the trail starts in El Paso and is a brilliant way to explore Texas's rich multicultural heritage. The Ysleta Mission is a highlight of this popular scenic driving route - consecrated in 1682, it's the oldest structure of its kind in Texas.

Further historical tales are showcased in many other galleries in El Paseo. Highly recommended are: The Magoffin Home State Historic Site, The El Paso Holocaust Museum, and The National Border Patrol Museum - this museum provides an insight into life protecting the border between Mexico and the United States.

For a more sedate cultural fix, the El Paso Museum of Art has an impressive collection of over 7,000 works of art.

Due to its great Mexican and Texan heritage, El Paso offers an array of incredible restaurants. Every type of eating experience is here, from street tacos, breakfast burritos, succulent BBQs, and 4-star restaurants, this city has a thriving food culture you will enjoy.


El Paso

Located only 32 miles west of Dallas, Fort Worth is another Texan city that offers many great tourist attractions. Fort Worth was nicknamed Cowtown for its strong connection with the cattle ranching industry. Although there is much to enjoy cattle-wise in its vicinity, there is also more to discover.

So start with immense bovine fun at Fort Worth Stockyards - this is a unique historic district and the last of its kind in the United States. Visitors can step back in time here and experience thrilling cattle round-ups and spend time as a cowboy or cowgirl. The neighbourhood also offers western-themed shopping, rodeos, live music performances, and the Stockyard Museum that details the history of Stockyards.

Fort Worth is also home to some wonderful museums of art. Highlights include the Kimbell Art Museum, the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and the Sid Richardson Museum which shows work depicting the spirit of the west.

The city’s Botanic Garden is one of Fort Worth’s most popular attractions. Covering 109 acres the venue is comprised of 23 individual gardens and over 2,500 species of plants. Fort Worth

Cycling or driving along the Fresno Blossom Trail is the perfect way to experience the beauty and plentiful produce of Fresno’s agricultural landscape. The best time of year to follow this 62 mile route is from late February to early March when the fruit and nut orchards it passes through are in full blossom. In later months, the path turns into the Fresno County Fruit Trail, with erected fruit stands selling seasonal produce dotted along the way.

In Fresno’s Downtown district you will find the incredible Forestiere Underground Gardens - a California Historical Landmark and a venue that offers a cool escape from hot summer temperatures. This is a subterranean labyrinth of tunnels, caverns, and patios that was hand dug by an Italian immigrant called Baldassare Forestiere in the first half of the twentieth century. Visitors can only enjoy this unusual and must-see Fresno tourist attraction via an official guided tour.

Fresno Chaffee Zoo is located only a few miles northwest and offers numerous exciting exhibits and things to do. Amongst the animals to see here are tigers and orangutans, and the venue hosts special tours that the whole family will appreciate.

Surrounding the zoo is Roeding Park a green space replete with picnic tables, shaded areas, and water fountains. A popular attraction here is the Rotary Storyland Playland Family Amusement Park that features fun amusements based on classic children's books.

Summer is celebrated in style in Fresno! Midsommer events worth noting in your travel diary include the outdoor Mariposa Music Series and the Fulton Street Party. The latter is a new festival that commemorates the history of the street and includes the Fulton Street Food Truck Fest with over 30 vehicles producing great cuisine!

Fresno

Located on the south shores of the island of Oahu, Honolulu is the main gateway for tourists visiting the state of Hawaii. However, this vibrant city is so enthralling that once here, you will be hugely tempted to linger a while and explore the region further.

Honolulu is generally considered to have three main districts: Waikiki, Downtown, and Pearl Harbor. Each has its own special attractions and individual landscape that makes them all appealing to visitors.

Waikiki is famous for its crescent sandy beach, surfing, and the presence of the Diamond Head crater on its horizon. The highly populated region is also Honolulu's main centre for hotels, shopping, and nightlife - you will discover some of Waikiki's best restaurants and boutiques along Kuhio and KalaKaua Avenues.

Downtown lies just to the west of Waikiki. Although a business district liberally peppered with modern skyscrapers, it is also home to many historical landmarks. Here you will find the seat of Hawaii’s government, the governor’s mansion Washington Place, and Honolulu’s City Hall ‘Honolulu Hale’. This is a great area for sightseeing and if on a walking tour make sure you include a visit to the Iolani Palace, the King Kamehameha I statue, and the Aloha Tower.

Pearl Harbor will forever be associated with World War II and the waterside district is host to many tourist attractions that document its place in history. Although still an active naval base Pearl Harbor also accommodates the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument. This incredible place hosts significant memorials and venues including the USS Arizona, USS Oklahoma, Battleship Row, and Ford Island. The Pearl Harbor Visitor Center is very informative, free to the public, and often the starting point for tours of the historic harbour.

Interesting venues in Honolulu include the Honolulu Museum of Art with its immense Asian Art collection that illustrates the extent that Asian culture has influenced Hawaii. Also don’t miss out on Hawaii's state museum, the Bishop Museum and Planetarium, which holds a fascinating collection of Polynesian arts and artifacts. Permanent exhibits here include a whole floor dedicated to the legendary world of Kai Ākea, where ancient gods exist.

Finally, two outdoor attractions that must be experienced during a trip to Honolulu are the Koko Crater Railway Trail and Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. The former is a memorable climbing trek up old railroad ties, with a rewarding review of Honolulu’s shoreline at the top. The latter is an unbeatable snorkeling experience in a natural bay formed from another historic volcano.

Famous for its historical connection with space exploration it’s no surprise that the city’s most popular attraction is the Space Center of Houston. Tour highlights include the world’s largest collection of lunar samples and moon rocks. Weekly events include meet and greet sessions with real-life astronauts!

Houston’s fascination with space is matched by an enthusiasm for wildlife. Animal lovers will be awed by the exhibits to be found at Houston Zoo and Houston Arboretum and Nature Center. The Downtown Aquarium is something special. A unique underwater adventure featuring a Louisiana swamp, shipwreck, rainforest, and sunken temple, Ferris wheel, and carousel. Space and science entwine at the Houston Museum of Natural Science: you can discover enthralling facts about galaxies at the inhouse Planetarium, or you can interact with butterflies in its Butterfly Center. Away from the track tourists can enjoy the three-mile canal walk alongside The Central Canal. The route offers visitors a lovely perspective of downtown Indianapolis and paddleboats can be hired on the waterway. Follow the canal from 11st Street all the way to White River State Park, taking in riverside shops, restaurants, and the Eiteljorg Museum, as you wander.

The park is one of the city’s best attractions, an impressive green space encompassing many of Indy’s best visitor attractions. Wildlife fans, take your binoculars and head to Little Talbot Island, home to dozens of native species. Then enjoy a guided kayak through Big Talbot Island’s wetland and marshes. Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park is another beautiful, oceanfront city park and also home to one of Jacksonville’s best surfing spots. One for the family is Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, with over 2,400 rare and exotic animals and 1,000 varieties of plants. For a walk on the wild side visit Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary, where you’ll find a variety of rescued exotic big cats.

If you simply want to soak up the sun, relax and eat local delicacies by the water, then Neptune or Atlantic beaches are the places for you. These are the perfect settings to drink a cold beer from the nearby Atlantic Beach Brewing Company and watch the sun go down.

Jacksonville offers a variety of art galleries and museums. Recommendations include The Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens, Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Science and History (MOSH), and The Lightner Museum.

So if retail therapy is your thing, then you will love St. Johns Town Center, Jacksonville’s shopping mecca. This open-air, palm tree-lined shopping delight offers everything from Tiffany to Target. Lying against the Mississippi River in Tennessee, few places in America have a richer musical heritage than Memphis. Located just twenty miles from Phoenix in Arizona, Mesa has beautiful countryside, a stunning horizon, and an enviable climate. The city’s history has been wonderfully curated at the Arizona Museum of Natural History - a gallery that focuses on the natural and cultural history of central Arizona and the greater Southwest. Calle Ocho lies at the heart of it all, a street jumping with Latin music venues, bistros, bakeries, and rum bars. You can’t leave Miami without a trip to the city's world-class beaches and world-famous Everglades. When you visit Miami Beach you will find soft sandy beaches and an area with great nightlife too. The Cream City of Milwaukee lies just 90 miles north of Chicago, on the west side of Lake Michigan. The three gigantic glass domes of The Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory are distinctive landmarks of Milwaukee. The impressive architecture stands 85 feet tall and houses plants from the tropics and desert areas. Shows and festivals are held throughout the year in the Show Dome, with the Christmas event being a very popular attraction for the locals and tourists.

Having a great German and Polish immigrant history, it’s not surprising that the sausage plays a major role in Milwaukee's food culture. Make sure you take the Milwaukee Food Tour! Oakland played a significant part in American civil rights and African-American history. The Black Panthers originated here and every visit to the city should include the official walking tour to discover the story of this important movement. Oakland

The Myriad Botanical Gardens in the heart of downtown Oklahoma City contains lush landscapes and is a beloved urban paradise for locals and tourists alike. Oklahoma City

Situated on the Missouri River in the state of Nebraska, Oakland is an enjoyable stopover for anyone undertaking the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail. The origins of the city have ensured its place in pioneer history and the story is well documented within museums in the region.

Oakland has developed beyond measure since its inception in 1854. Today the city has benefited from billions of dollars in urban regeneration schemes providing both locals and tourists with many cultural attractions.

A highlight of these developments is a pedestrian bridge nicknamed Bob. Remarkable in many aspects, the unique Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge is an s-curved footbridge that connects two American states - providing walkers and cyclists with a scenic route across the water to Iowa.

Close by in Downtown Omaha lies Lewis and Clark Landing a 23-acre green space with an interesting National Park Visitor Center. The Lauritzen Gardens is another recommended outdoor visitor attraction in the area. The venue, located in the South Omaha district, features a bird sanctuary, beautiful botanical gardens, and an arboretum.

One of Nebraska’s most popular attractions is Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. Spanning over 160 acres this is a fascinating place where you will experience some unexpected exhibits. Everything here is done on a large scale so take your time to appreciate: Dome Desert - the largest indoor desert in the world; the Suzanne and Walter Scott Aquarium - a 70-foot-long shark tunnel; Lied Jungle - North America's biggest indoor rainforest; The Kingdoms of the Night - a huge nocturnal gallery where you can view animals close up and in the dark.

Make sure you don’t miss out on Omaha’s museums and external artistic displays that depict its emotive history. The best of these include Durham Museum and the Spirit of Nebraska's Wilderness and Pioneer Courage Park. Omaha

Located on the rivers Delaware and Schuylkill rivers in Pennsylvania, Philadelphia is the fifth-largest in the United States. The ‘City of Brotherly Love’ offers a great deal to visitors looking for historical and cultural attractions.

Philadelphia is a city with history coursing through its veins. The first important stop for tourists interested in the story of America is Independence Hall! This is the UNESCO World Heritage Site where the country’s Founding Fathers gathered in 1776 to lay the framework for the US Constitution. The Liberty Bell, another iconic symbol of American Independence, is situated opposite and is free to visit all year-round.

The Benjamin Franklin Parkway is Philadelphia’s artistic mile, housing some of the city’s most important institutions. These include The Barnes Foundation, The Franklin Institute, and The Academy of Natural Sciences.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art contains an array of Impressionist and post-Impressionist paintings including one of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers. In front of the building lie the aforementioned steps that were famously ascended by Sylvester Stallone in the movie Rocky. A statue of his film character now stands near the front of the museum.

The renowned Philadelphia Orchestra is based at the modern Kimmel Center. Philadelphia

This is the capital of the southwestern state of Arizona, known for warm temperatures, Jack Nicklaus-inspired golf courses, and a decadent nightclub scene. The city and surrounding metropolitan area are collectively called the Valley of the Sun as they see very little rainfall and lie across the Sonoran Desert.

Locals are delightfully overindulged with the 189 city parks and gardens in their midst. Highlights of these include the serene Japanese Friendship Garden, Desert Botanical Garden, and vast South Mountain Park.

Phoenix’s artistic community sometimes combines both internal and external environments for activities. First Fridays Art Walk, a popular monthly event, allows visitors to appreciate the city’s diverse art scene at over 70 exhibitions in one day. Some of the best art galleries in the city are located in Old Town Scottsdale. In May and June, the flower is gloriously showcased at the city’s annual Rose Festival.

Another floral delight is the Portland Japanese Garden a place once called “the most beautiful and authentic Japanese garden in the world outside of Japan” by a former Japanese ambassador. The garden encompasses 12 acres and 8 individually designed gardens, some with streams and peaceful walkways, others with views of the city and Mount Hood.

A great day trip is a visit out to Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, a river site of 292,500 acres that includes incredible viewpoints and hiking trails. Make sure you take in the dramatic Multnomah Falls waterfalls and divine Oneonta Gorge.

Designed as the state capital of North Carolina, Raleigh was named after the famous explorer who established a short-lived English settlement here in the 1580s. The area proudly boasts over 9,000 acres of parkland. These parks and nature reserves provide enjoyable walking and hiking trails, where you can appreciate many varieties of flora and fauna. Raleigh’s extensive lakes are also popular throughout the year and are great locations for kayaking and other water sports.

Pullen Park is highly recommended not only for its lovely surroundings but also for some fun attractions that are suitable for all the family. Everyone will enjoy time on one of the park's miniature train rides or a pedal boat cruise around Lake Howell.

Another top attraction in Raleigh is the William B. Umstead State Park, a territory replete with winding pathways, three lakes, and an unexpected art installation. Visitors flock here for the fishing and to hire a canoe or rowing boat. IWhen you follow the Graylyn trail you will discover a fallen oak tree, beautifully carved with elaborate images of the region's wildlife.

Raleigh is also home to three fantastic museums: North Carolina Museum of Art, North Carolina Museum of History, and North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. The architecture of each building is impressive, the exhibits are innovative and admission to each venue is free to the public.

Every trip to Raleigh should include an experience within its diverse art scene. The city’s cultural calendar is pleasingly packed with a variety of events and highlights include performances by the North Carolina Opera, North Carolina Symphony, or Carolina Ballet. Special theatre productions are often held outside in one of Raleigh’s parks and the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts is one of the main tourist attractions in the city.


Raleigh

Sacramento is not only California’s state capital but it’s often considered the finest place located on Californian soil. The city’s districts are teeming with great cafes and breweries and its walls are alive with colourful art murals.

You can tell the food offering in Sacramento is good via the many positive Zagat ratings awarded to eateries in the region. Also, and impressively, the city’s fine-dining sector entered the hallowed halls of the Michelin Guide in 2019, with 14 here restaurants receiving an honour.

The first stop for foodies in Sacramento is Midtown, a vibrant area famed for first-class dining and the popular Midtown Farmers Market. The market hosts regular demonstrations by professional chefs and appealing booths selling specialist craft products. The neighbourhood is also known for its interesting art galleries and regular 2nd Saturday Art Walk - a monthly fair that showcases local artists with wine and live music.

The top tourist attraction in Midtown is Sutter's Fort State Historic Park. The venue includes Sutter's Fort Museum and commemorates Sacramento’s often difficult history, and when gold was discovered in the region.

Old Sacramento is another place where you can discover more about the California Gold Rush. This atmospheric waterfront district with historic buildings and wooden sidewalks will take you right back to the era! Sacramento

Located 75 miles southwest of Austin in a corner of the Texas Triangle you cannot visit San Antonio without experiencing its historical past. The Alamo stands as a symbol of the spirit of the state, where Texans fought Mexicans in an ill-fated last stand that defined the soul of the ‘Lone Star State’. Located in the UNESCO San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, admission to the Alamo is free, but there is a charge for guided and audio tours.

As one of the oldest cathedrals in the US, the San Fernando Cathedral is also a must-see historical landmark. The visiting experience is especially moving in the evening when a stunning light show illuminates its exterior.

The River Walk, also known as Paseo del Rio, follows a network of waterways that wind around the city. This is a great way to view the city and discover shops, boutiques, bars, cafes, and restaurants. Looking for some tranquility? Then relax in the beautiful Botanical Gardens and Japanese Tea Gardens. Alternatively, head thirty minutes out of town for the Natural Bridge Caverns, and explore some of the largest natural caves in all the state.

As you would expect Tex-Mex food is a staple of the area and there is no better place to taste this than Market Square. This iconic venue hosts the biggest Mexican market in the US and is liberally littered with shops and cafes, and is a souvenir-lovers ideal location.

At the end of the day, head back to the San Antonio River, the cultural epicentre of the city. Here you can mix with the locals in a variety of bars and restaurants, enjoy a friendly atmosphere and watch Downtown’s glittering lights dance across the water.


San Antonio

Visitors to San Diego will enjoy endless sunny days, dramatic landscapes, and an intriguing culture that offers many diverse attractions. In this most laidback of American cities, you can hit the surf, hang out with wolves, or bar hop with hippies in North Park.

San Diego is located just a two-hour drive south of Los Angeles, and only a matter of miles from the Mexican border. Its sandy coastline, mountain communities, and the hilly region of East County all offer tourists enjoyable attractions to be experienced during their stay.

The roads in and out of San Diego are unforgettable. Highway 101 covers 70 miles alongside the Pacific Coast, it offers unbelievable views and links worthwhile beachside stops including Oceanside to La Jolla.

Highway 79, beginning at Descanso, allows drivers to explore the mountainous area that heads north to Warner Springs. Don’t miss a tour at The California Wolf Center or a visit to quaint Julian, a town founded in the Gold Rush of 1869.

At twilight, you must check out the Gaslamp Quarter, a large area of historical atmospheric blocks. This is the entertainment centre of the West Coast and the place in San Diego to eat, drink, be merry and dance your flip-flops off.


San Diego

There are many reasons why Time Out declared San Francisco to be the best city in the world. The pleasant climate is a factor, as are the surrounding landscapes, location by the Pacific, and a host of incredible cultural attractions.

It’s impossible to miss Golden Gate Bridge, the glorious suspension bridge that crosses over San Franciso Bay and connects the city with Marin County. You can traverse the bridge during the day by car, bicycle, or on foot, and it’s one of the best views of San Francisco when lit up at night.

The second most iconic landmark here, and a must-see attraction, is Alcatraz. Tourists can take a short ferry ride to visit this penitentiary and take guided audio tours delivered by former inmates and prison guards. No longer home to prisoners like the gangster Al Capone, today Alcatraz is a haven for nesting seabirds.

Exploring San Francisco’s hilly domain by cable car is highly recommended. This is the only public transport system in the world that is also considered a historic monument. Take one of its scenic routes to shop in Ghirardelli Square or visit Nob Hill, Hyde Street Pier, and Fisherman’s Wharf near Pier 39.

On Marin County mainland, the best views can be found in Sausalito, including one of Angel Island State Park. Other outdoor spaces worth seeing include Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Twin Peaks, and Golden Gate Park. The latter is home to The California Academy of Sciences that incorporates the innovative Steinhart Aquarium, Osher Rainforest, and Kimball National History Museum.

After dark, the only downside in this city is that there is so much to do, you won’t know where to start! As San Francisco is as beautiful at night as it is in the day then jump on an evening bus tour to take in the sights of the Financial District, Alamo Square, and Embarcadero. If you want to dine out then delicious food awaits you in Chinatown and Union Square; partygoers should then bar crawl your way along the rooftop bars and nightclubs of North Beach and SoMa.


San Francisco

Reaching from the southern shores of San Franciso Bay, San Jose’s landscape is shaped by the hills of Silicon Valley and its beautiful surrounding vineyards. As the largest in Northern California, this is an exciting and industrious city, where you can have fun, relax and appreciate the arts.

Some of the best cultural attractions can be found in Downtown San Jose - an appealing district that offers historic architecture, boutique shopping, and alfresco dining. A must-see venue here is The Tech Interactive. This is a fascinating and futuristic museum where you can interact with state-of-the-art technology not yet available on the market. The area also has plenty to offer art enthusiasts including the San Jose Museum of Art and San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles.

Downtown’s San Pedro Square is one of the oldest parts of San Jose. It’s also one of the trendiest and a great place to venture if you want a selection of good restaurants and live music entertainment. A highlight is the San Pedro Square Market, a food hall with all types of eateries and a weekly farmers market.

There are some delightful green spaces in San Jose including the Municipal Rose Garden and Castle Rock State Park. If you enjoy rock climbing you will love exploring the park's caverns and its craggy namesake Castle Rock.

Of course, if you are visiting San Jose for the wine - you are going to be spoilt for choice! There are exceptional tasting rooms located in the city or you can round off your trip with a visit to a California vineyard in the hills. There are many independent wineries in Silicon Valley offering great tours and spectacular views. The Santa Cruz Mountains wine region is highly recommended and only twenty minutes drive from Downtown San Jose.

San Jose

Settled at the foothills of Sangre de Cristo mountains in New Mexico, Santa Fe is an intriguing state capital and tourist destination. Referred to as ‘The City Different’ it offers visitors a wonderful blend of Anglo, Spanish, Mexican, and Native American cultures - influences that can be enjoyed throughout Santa Fe’s amazing architecture, art, cuisine, music, and historical landmarks.

The city is well known for being a creative hotbed and is hugely popular with art enthusiasts. To really appreciate why just take a short stroll down Canyon Road. This former trade route is now home to over 100 studios and galleries that sell sculpture, paintings, jewelry, and ceramics. Many of these venues are fascinating workshops showcasing artists at work. Two other creative neighborhoods that should be on your art-inspired tour are downtown Lincoln Avenue and Railyard District.

Santa Fe also has world-class museums and venues including the Santa Fe Opera House, New Mexico Museum of Art, Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, and the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture. The latter is particularly interesting as it curates Native American art and culture and hosts performances of music, dance, and storytelling.

The city's most captivating architecture can be found in Santa Fe’s Historic District. This lovely neighbourhood has picturesque lanes lined with low adobe buildings and atmospheric Spanish colonial churches. Near the centre you will find a traditional Spanish Plaza where local artisans sell art and crafts underneath the impressive Palace of the Governors.

One of the best things to do during your stay in Santa Fe is to take a tour out into Northern New Mexico. The countryside is liberally dotted with wineries and artist studios, and you will also discover Native American pueblos.

Finally, there are some great ski areas in New Mexico within a short distance of Santa Fe. One popular resort is Ski Fanta Fe located only 15 miles from the city that offers over 650 acres of skiing terrain. The resort has 7 lifts and offers equipment rentals and skinning lessons, and it can be reached via a handy shuttle bus service direct from downtown Santa Fe.

Santa Fe

Seattle is famous for being the headquarters to tech giants like Microsoft and Amazon; it‘s also the place where Starbucks opened their first coffee house. You can visit the original location, which opened in 1971 or take a tour at the Starbucks Reserve Roastery, where you can see how the coffee is roasted. Surely the perfect way to start your day in this coffee mad metropolis.

Located next door to the first Starbucks outlet is Pike Place Market. Opened in 1907, the market is a flourishing community of farmers, street performers, restaurants, underground shops, and bookstores. This is Seattle's most visited attraction, where you can taste local cuisine at its very best, at the Pink Door, Pike Place Chowder, Lowell’s, and the Crumpet Shop.

Seattle is full of parks and beaches that offer outdoor activities to enjoy during the warmer months. Kayak or paddleboard from Gas Works Park to Lake Union Park, play volleyball and enjoy a campfire on Alki Beach, or explore the conservatory in Volunteer Park.

For the best views of Seattle, head to the top of Space Needle. This iconic landmark offers panoramic views from the Pacific Ocean to the Olympic Mountains. The 175-foot-tall Seattle Great Wheel on Pier 57 also offers impressive vistas of this beautiful harbour city.

Seattle has many museums of interest and a trip to Pioneer Square is highly recommended. The area is home to: the Klondike Gold Rush Museum, Wing Luke Museum, Seattle Art Museum (SAM), and Museum of Flight.

As the birthplace of 80’s Grunge, a genre pioneered by the band Nirvana, Seattle is respected for its contribution to the international music scene. The city’s passion for music and modern culture is celebrated at the Museum of Pop Culture - an inspirational venue that should definitely be on your must-see list!


Seattle

Surrounded by five mountain ranges and blessed with wide-open spaces, this region of America’s Southwest is a mecca for hikers. Much of the landscape is protected and provides miles of hiking trails that cross sandy desert land and wander through pine groves.

In early November you can join an unexpected and unforgettable festival for lost ones on the streets of Tucson in The All Souls Procession Weekend. Similar to the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos, The Day of the Dead, the fiesta celebrates Tucson’s diverse population and features floats, dancing, singing, and food.

Tucson Meet Yourself is also a highlight, a fair that showcases Southern Arizona’s and Northern Mexico’s diverse ethnic and folk communities. Held in Downtown Tucson during mid-October, the three-day event features art, music, and cuisine from every community in the area.

No visit to Tucson can avoid an immersive step into history and culture via the incredible food served in this city. The eating experience is so good that Tucson has been named a UNESCO City of Gastronomy. You can taste Tucson’s Mexican and Native American heritage in the dishes prepared here that use local produce including cactus, sunflowers, prickly pear, and squash.

Make sure you have time for a gastronomic feast with a Southern Arizona wine in one of many excellent restaurants found in neighbourhoods like Central Tucson District, Southside District, and Westside District.

Tucson

A real highlight of the iconic Route 66 is this Oaklahoma city that sits on the Arkansas River. When you stop and spend time in Tulsa you will experience some of the finest of America’s past and present culture. Recommended landmarks on this part of the road include Ollie's Station Restaurant and the Cyrus Avery Centennial Plaza with its bronze sculptures.

Tulsa is unexpectedly home to an impressive collection of art deco buildings and you will find great examples of this architecture along the streets of Deco District. This lovely metropolis is located in the state of Virginia at the point where Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. Its genuine laid-back atmosphere and slow pace of life make it an ideal place for a mini-break or long holiday.

As a coastal city, Virginia Beach has been blessed with beautiful beaches and long scenic boardwalks. It also has neighbourhoods with historical landmarks, brilliant shopping, and vibrant art scenes. Whether it’s surfing at Oceanfront, retail therapy at Inland district, arts and crafts in ViBe Creative District, or the farmer's markets of Pungo - every visitor will find something enjoyable to experience here.

Virginia Beach

Sitting on the Potomac River between Maryland and Virginia, this glorious capital city is full of iconic neoclassical buildings that honour American history. Many are located in the heart of Washington at the National Mall - a long stretch of landscaped park located between the Lincoln Memorial and the United States Capitol.
