I believe learning the history of a city is a very important part of travel. So I love taking city tours, especially when they specialize in something specific - such as tours specifically about the Jewish history of New York.

<a href="https://topcityspots.com/in/usa/new-york/id/lower-east-side-jewish-conservancy-623ca12161aae71bba5c6051">The Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy</a> is dedicated to preserving, sharing and celebrating the Jewish heritage of New York's Lower East Side, by offering unique Jewish history tours.

This non-profit educational organization was created in 1998 and their knowledgeable guides will lead you on an exploration of The Lower East Side's Jewish sites. They offer many public tours on a particular subject as well as special private tours crafted to your interests. And all proceeds go to support the Conservancy's work preserving the neighbourhood's heritage.

Out of their various tours, one of the standouts is their special tour of the Bialystoker Synagogue, as they are the only touring organization with access to this synagogue. This historical site, originally built in 1826 as a church, was believed to be a stop on the 19th-century Underground Railroad. 

In the early 20th century the building was then transformed into a synagogue and is now a landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the largest active congregation on the Lower East Side.

Not only will you learn about a whole new side of history, but you will also awe at the beauty of this multicoloured marvel covered in stained glass, murals, and symbols of the zodiac.
