Situated at the western tip of Lake Ontario, Hamilton is a great destination for tourists visiting Canada. There are many memorable outdoor activities to pursue here and the landscape is remarkable.

For exceptional beauty, you need only look towards the immediate environs of the Niagara Escarpment. This is forested terrain known locally as ‘the mountain’ that divides the city in half - the north of Hamilton lies below the ridge, the southern region partly above. Within this region, you will encounter scenic conservation areas, waterfalls, and a variety of hiking trails.

There are over 100 waterfalls located in this region and many of the most picturesque can be found near Hamilton. Favourite spots include Albion Falls, also known as ‘Lovers Leap’, and the 41 metre high Tes Falls. Highly recommended is the ‘Great Falls Loop’, a trail that will take you past spectacular falls and offers immense views of the surrounding countryside.

The good news for enthusiastic hikers is that Hamilton is a perfect starting point to undertake the Bruce Trail. The famous walking route, that passes Niagara Falls in the US, has scenic paths throughout this part of Canada and features another pretty waterfall: Canterbury Falls.

Down in Hamilton Harbour, you will find Bayfront Park, one of Hamilton’s most appealing urban green spaces. This regenerated land is now a waterside haven that also has great walking trails, a sandy beach, and a marina.

Elsewhere in this waterside district you can visit the historic HMCS Haida or rollerblade alongside the flowerbeds of Hamilton’s Royal Botanical Gardens. If you want to take in the view at a more gentle pace, then hop on the Harbor West Trolley for a while. This charming service follows 12 kilometers of the harbour front and provides an interesting commentary on the historical and cultural landmarks of Hamilton.

The shores of Québec are now accessible by bridge, boat, or cable! Yes, Ottawa boasts the first interprovincial zipline! This highly recommended attraction departs from Chaudière Island and offers every brave flyer a dramatic view of Ottawa’s Parliament Hill.

The Rideau Canal is another scenic Ottawan waterway that provides an unexpected and fun surprise. In Spring and Summer, you can cruise or paddle up this UNESCO World Heritage Site and enjoy the sights of the city. In Winter the canal turns into the Rideau Canal Skateway, the world’s largest skating rink, and it’s best appreciated with your skates on.

This amazing canal, also known as the Rideau Waterway, divides the central part of the city. To the north is a district called Lower Town, home to the National Gallery of Canada, Notre Dame Basilica, and Byward Market. All three are popular venues with tourists and the latter offers great options for dining and nightlife. Head south to discover the more stylish neighbourhood of Upper Town to see the iconic Bank of Canada building and to undertake some great shopping.

Finally, if you choose your date to visit Ottawa wisely, you will be able to experience one of the citys’ brilliant festivals. From Winter’s Winterlude to the Canadian Tulip Festival in May - check out Ottawa’s annual event calendar for an array of fantastic events held in the city each year.

Overlooking the St. Lawrence River from a high location above steep cliffs, Québec City is arguably the most fascinating city in the province of Québec. This mostly French-speaking region in eastern Canada is also home to the more cosmopolitan Montréal, but for history and breathtaking scenery, you can’t beat Québec City.

At the heart of the city lies Old Québec: Vieux-Québec, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the only fortified walled city in North America. This district offers a feast of historic landmarks and is best enjoyed on foot via its cobblestone streets.

Amongst the top attractions to see here is the Citadelle, a star-shaped fortress replete with ramparts and ditches. Guided tours of the historic venue detail the garrison’s 300-year-old story and provide spectacular views of Québec City and the river.

Next, wander through the grounds and 17th and 18th century architecture of Place Royale - the spot where the city was originally founded. Today it is a charming environment with restaurants, shops, and lovely patios, where you can sit and take in the beauty of your surroundings.

Other highly recommended landmarks to visit in the district are Notre-Dame des Victoires, Musée de la Civilisation, and the little Batterie Royale that overlooks the water.

A highlight of any tour of Québec City is a stroll around Quartier Petit-Champlain. With its impressive European architecture, the area is considered one of the most enchanting parts of the city. Amongst its narrow streets, you will find unique shops, art galleries, and great restaurants. One of the best things to see here is Rue du Cul de Sac, a picturesque lane covered with umbrellas.

Outside the city walls stand two iconic cultural landmarks worth visiting: Plains of Abraham and Parliament Building. The former, also known as Champs de Bataille, is a picturesque green park. The latter is the home of Québec's provincial government and its historic halls and grounds are open to the public for tours.

Try not to leave this amazing Canadian city before taking a trip on the Québec-Levis Ferry. The short passage across the St. Lawrence River provides yet another great way to experience the beauty of this city. Catch a late crossing at dusk to take in the illuminated Château Frontenac and Québec City’s historic skyline.

Winnipeg is the capital of the Canadian province of Manitoba. Located at the heart of Canada’s varied and striking landscape, Winnipeg’s climate is variable and dramatic too! Temperatures here can vary between a heart-stopping -35 degrees °C in the winter and sublime +35 degrees °C in the summertime. Each season the city transforms and offers tourists different and enjoyable reasons to visit.

The city is famous in international sporting circles as the home of the Winnipeg Jets, a US ice hockey team. However, everyone can enjoy fun on the ice in Winnipeg during the winter months. Activities range from traditional skating and tobogganing to the more modern curling game of Crokicurl.

One of the top attractions for tourists during the colder months in Winnipeg is the Arctic Glacier Winter Park. Here you can skate along 1.2 kilometres of illuminated trails, experience the beauty of The Plaza Skating Rink or a breathless toboggan run. The iced pathways of the park connect the venue to The Plaza and Market areas of The Forks, a historic district of Winnipeg.

The Forks is a special neighbourhood that can be enjoyed throughout the whole year. Situated at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers, it is a meeting place comprised of green spaces, historical landmarks, retail outlets, and cultural attractions. Highly recommended for visitors are the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the River Walk tour, and The Forks Historic Port. In warm weather, this district is the perfect destination for alfresco dining or a picnic by the river. When the temperature drops the same river becomes a popular place for ice-skating!

Some of the best attractions in Winnipeg are centred around the arts. A highlight is WAG-Qaumajuq, a venue formerly known as the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Originally founded in 1912 the WAG is one of Canada’s first public art foundations and the gallery is located near the centre of downtown Winnipeg. Recently opened in 2021 the adjoining Qaumajuq is an Inuit art centre that features the largest collection of contemporary Inuit artwork in the world.

If you love live music, one of the best times to visit Winnipeg is during the hot months of July and August. Head to Corydon Avenue, a popular neighbourhood for nightlife that is often referred to as Winnipeg’s ‘Little Italy’. Friday and Saturday nights are concert nights here and the atmosphere is always fun. Stop and spend time sitting at one of the busy outdoor patios and listen to many different genres of music - from Jazz to rock and roll.
